§ 01 — originWhy we built Captain’s Deck
We’ve been using dual-pane file managers since the DOS days — Norton Commander, Midnight Commander, Total Commander. Those tools shaped how we think about moving files: source pane, destination pane, every operation explicit, your hands never leaving the keyboard. When we switched to macOS the existing alternatives were either too basic, too bloated, or missing the keyboard-first philosophy we loved.
So we built Captain’s Deck — a file manager that combines the best of the orthodox tradition with modern macOS design. Native Swift and AppKit for performance. Vim-style navigation for speed. A built-in terminal that actually syncs with the active pane. And yes, a Norton Commander theme for those nostalgic moments.
§ 02 — valuesWhat we believe
Native, all the way down
Captain’s Deck is 100% native. No Electron, no cross-platform wrappers — just Swift and AppKit. It feels like a Mac app because it is one: real menus, real keyboard equivalents, Quick Look, Spotlight, Keychain, Stage Manager, Mission Control. Everything you already know how to use.
Keyboard first, mouse welcome
Every action has a binding. Drag-and-drop is fine for icons on a poster — it’s a terrible primitive for serious file work. We don’t hide things behind clicks if they can be reached with a key.
Listen to users
Feature requests, bug reports, and feedback shape the roadmap. Every release ships changes that came from email or our feedback tracker. Captain’s Deck gets better because users tell us where it isn’t good enough yet.
